Red Fort complex,also known as Lal Qila is a palace fort built in the 17 century by Shahjahan(1628-1658)the fifth Mughal emperor as part of his new capital city of Shahjahanbad located to the North of Delhi.The architectural design of the structures built within the fort represents a blend of Persian,Tilmuri and Indian architectural styles;Isfahan,the Persian Capital is said to have provided the inspiration to build the Red Fort Complex.The planning and design of this complex,in a geometrical gri plan with pavilion structures.The palace complex has been fortified by an enclosure wall bilt with red sandstone (hence the nam Red Fort).The palace within the fort complex , located behind the Diwan-i-Am(Hall Of Public Audience),comprises a series of richly engraved marble palace pavilions,interconnected by water channels called the Diwane-i-khas(Private audience hall),several other essential private structures,and also the Moti Masjid(Pearl Mosque built by Emperor Aurangzeb).The fort complex is considered to represent the Zenith of Mughal creativity under ShahJahan,and although the palace was planned according to Islamic prototypes,each pavillion contains architectural elements typical Mughal buildings that reflect a fusion of Timurid and Persian traditions.The Red Fort's innovative architectural style , including its garden design,influenced later buildings and gardens in Delhi,Rajasthan,Kashmir,Braj,Rohilkhand and elsewhere.The fort was plundred of ots artwork and jewels during Nadir Shah's invasion of the Mughal empire in 1747.Most of the Fort's precious marble structures were subsequently destroyed by the British following Sepoy Mutiny of 1857.The fort's defensive walls were largely spared,and the fortress was subsequently used as a garrison.The ReFort was also the site where the British put the last Mughal Emperor on trial before Exiling him to Rangoon in 1858.
