- Great Living Chola Temples,Thanjavar
The great living chola temples were built the kings of Chola dynasty and Empire.The site includes three great temples of 11 and 12 centuries namely , the Brihadisvara temple at Thanjavur,the Brihadisvara temple at Gangaikondacholisvaram and the Airavatesvara temple at Darusam.Brihadisvara Temple built by emperor Rajaraja who ruled between 985 and 1012Ad.The Brihadisvara Temple ,dedicated to Lord Shiva.The temple is built over 29 square base and is surrounded by moat on two sided and Grand Anaicut river on the side other.The walls of the complex are adorned by beautiful paintings belonging to chola period.It was inscribed in the UNESCO in 1982.
