Qutb Minar as the center of the Qutb Complex, which is a red sandstone tower of 72.5 metres (238 ft) height with a base of 14.32 metres(47ft)reducing to 2.75 metres(9ft)diameter at the top.It contains a spiral staircase of 379 steps. It is five storeys high. The band of inscriptions we see under the first balcony are in Arabic language. The first floor was constructed by Qutbudin Aybak and the rest was constructed by Sultan Iltutmish in around 1299.Qutb Minar was damaged be several natural disasters like lightning, earthquakes etc and was repaired by Alauddin Khalji,Muhammad Tughluq,Firuz Shah and Ibrahim Lodi. Then there is a shinning iron pillar in the Qutb Complex of 7.02 metres (23ft)height (without any trace of rusting)erected at the centre of the complex ,with inscriptions in Sanskrit,of the Chandra Gupta two period is a moot witness. Then Qutb Complex also has Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque, which was built at the same time as the Minar. The nearby pillared cupola known as 'smiths's Folly 'is a remnant of the tower's 19th century restoration, which included an ill advised attempt to add a sixth storey.
