The Elephanta Caves are a network of sculpted caves located on Elephanta Island,or Gharapuri ('THE CITY OF CAVES')in Mumbai harbour,10 kilometer es to the east of the city of Mumbai.It is a collection of cave temples predominantly dedicated to lord Shiva.The island is located on an arm of the Arabian sea,consists of two groups of caves-the first is a large group of five Hindu caves and the second a smaller group of two Buddhist caves.The Hindu caves contain rock cut stone sculptures,representing the Shiva Hindu sect,dedicated to lord Shiva.The rock-cut architecture of the caves is dated to between the 5 and 8 centuries,although the identity of the original still a subject of debate.The caves are built from solid basalt rock.These were renovated in the 1970s,the caves were designated an UNESCO world heritage site in 1987 to preserve the artwork.It is a very beautiful piece of artwork and it is a place worth visiting!
