- Fatehpur Sikri,Uttarpradesh
Fatehpur Sikri is a very small city in northern India, west of Agra, built by king Akbar in 16th century.Red sandstone buildings cluster at its center. It is also called the 'THE CITY OF VICTORY'.It was capital of the empire and seat of the grand Mughal court, but only for 14 years.Despite bearing exceptional testimony to the Mughal civilization at the end of the 16 century,it had to be abandoned due to the twin reasons of lack of water and unrest in North-west India, leading the emperor to shift the capital to lahore.Buland Darwaza gate is the entrance to Jama Masjid mosque.Nearby is the marble Tomb of Salim Chistri.Diwan -E-Khas hall has a carved central pillar.Jodha Bais Palace is a mix of Hindu and Mughal styles, next to the 5-story Panch Mahal that overlooks the site.Panch Mahal is a five storey palace, also known as 'Badgir' meaning wind catcher tower, was commissioned by sikarwar rajputs. This structure stands close to the Zenana quarters which supports the supposition that it was used for entertainment and relaxation. It was inscribed in the UNESCO inn 1986.It is a very beautiful city and a good tourist distraction!
