It is one of the busiest railway stations in India,and serves Central Railway trains terminating at Mumbai as well as the Mumbai suburban Railway.The station was designed by Frederick William Stevens,a consulting architect in 1887 took ten years to complete and was named "Victoria Terminus" in honour of the Queen or Empress Victoria;it was opened on the date of her Golden Jubilee in 1887.This famous architectural landmark in Gothic style was built as the headquarters of the Great Indian Peninsular Railway.In 1996,in response to demands by the Shiv Sena and in keeping with the policy of renaming locations with Indian names,the station was renamed by the state government after Chhatrapati Shivaji,the famed 17th-century Maratha king.It was inscribed in the UNESCO in 2004.The station is 129 years old and cos ted rupees 16,14,000 at that time.Currently it costs rupees 2,o13.4 million.The building exhibits a fusion of influences from Victorian Italianate Gothic revival architecture and classical Indian architecture.It has a total of 18 platforms,eleven platforms are for inter city trains.The station has been the location of filming the movies "jai ho",the song in "slumdog millionaire"and "ra.one".It was also showed in the movie "the attacks of 26/11".The station was heavily featured on the BBC two show World's Busiest Railways2015.
