- Buddhist Monuments at San
chi
The small town of Sanchi is synonymous with Buddhist stupas-he mi-spherical structures typically containing mind blowing relics of Buddha and his followers. The stupas of Sanchi were constructed on the orders of Emperor Ashoka to preserve and spread the Buddhist philosophy.Sanchi has been protecting these beautiful and sacred architectural wonders, just the way these wonders have been safe guarding the ancient history and art of the Mauryan period. It was inscribed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1989.The Greco Buddhist style of architecture is reflected in the Ashoka Pillar at Sanchi. The most remarkable quality of the Ashoka Pillar is that it is very well proportioned. The structural balance of the Ashoka pillar is very admirable. It bears a lot of resemblance to the pillar at Sarnath. It is quite intricately carved but the lions of this Ashoka Pillar in Sanchi do not support the wheel of law f Dharmachakra. The polish of the Ashoka Pillar is brilliant and shines to this day.The stupas at Sanchi were built during the Mauryan period were made of bricks and the stupas were built and destroyed during Shunga and Satavahana period. The complex flourished until the 11 century.
